I got an e-mail from Ethan after linking to his NYT article about "Urban Tribes" a few weeks ago. There's a whole site about the subject, at Urban Tribes of the Never-Marrieds by Ethan Watters, and there will be a book next year. I'll have to look at it more sometime...
